With the Local Council I (LC I) elections set for tomorrow (Tuesday, July 28), the Electoral Commission in Kamwenge District has confirmed that 134 candidates have been declared unopposed, paving the way for an uncontested victory in several villages.
The Kamwenge District Returning Officer, George William Magezi, said the candidates emerged unopposed from the district's 442 villages following the close of the nomination process.
According to Magezi, the nominations were largely dominated by candidates from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and independent candidates, reflecting strong participation from both political and non-partisan contestants.
"Out of the 442 villages in Kamwenge District, a total of 134 LC I chairperson candidates have been declared unopposed following the conclusion of nominations. Most of the candidates who were nominated are from the National Resistance Movement and independent candidates," Magezi told Nile Post.
He also revealed that three candidates are still completing the legal process of withdrawing from the race, a development that could further increase the number of unopposed candidates before polling begins.
"We also have three candidates who are processing their withdrawal from the race. Once the legal procedures are completed, we shall communicate the final status accordingly," he said.
Magezi assured residents that the Electoral Commission has finalized all preparations for Tuesday's elections, with polling materials already dispatched to their respective polling stations.
"The Electoral Commission is fully prepared to conduct free, fair and transparent elections. All election materials have already been dispatched, and polling officials are ready to execute their duties," he said.
He urged both candidates and voters to observe electoral laws and maintain peace throughout the electoral process.
"I urge all candidates and voters to conduct themselves peacefully, respect the electoral guidelines, and allow the democratic process to take its course without intimidation or violence," Magezi emphasized.
Uganda will hold Local Council I elections tomorrow, Tuesday, July 28, 2026, during which voters will elect village chairpersons and committee members in one of the country's most grassroots democratic exercises.
The LC I elections remain a key pillar of Uganda's local governance system, with village leaders playing an important role in community mobilisation, dispute resolution and the implementation of government programmes at the grassroots level.
